Cooling Fan Clutch

The Cooling Fan Clutch is a thermostatic device, which is part of your car's automotive cooling system. It is usually located in front of the water pump and is belt-driven by the engine's crankshaft. Depending on the engine's temperature, the fan clutch engages and disengages with the radiator cooling fan. The radiator cooling fan is partially engaged when the engine is cool or at normal temperature. It is fully engaged when the engine gets hotter and reaches the preset temperature. This process saves power, as the fan is not fully driven by the engine.

Cooling fan clutches are generally viscous or fluid couplings, combined with a bi-metallic strip, while others are electrically controlled. The bi-metallic strip is used to convert the change in temperature to mechanical displacement.
