Chrysler Power Steering Rack Parts
You recently got into a front-end accident when you rear-ended someone because you did not see that the traffic light was red. You hit the car in front of you pretty hard but most of the damage was done to your Chrysler. Aside from being a little shaken up you did not suffer any physical injuries but the same was not true for your Chrysler. You had a lot of damage in the front end of your Chrysler and need to get a lot of parts replaces. Your Chrysler steering rack was damaged so you will need to get a new one. In this article we will take a look at the kinds of Chrysler steering racks you can get.
The first type of steering rack we will look at is the Chrysler manual steering rack. This steering rack used to be more popular in older cars until the more efficient power steering rack came out. The manual steering rack gives you a bit more feel of your steering but it is also harder to maneuver since you need to use a lot more force to turn the steering wheel. The type of gear that was usually used was a recirculating-ball steering gearbox or a worm gear. The recirculating ball steering contains a worm gear. The worm gear is single a block with a threaded hole and gear teeth cut into the outside to engage the sector shaft and move the pitman arm. The steering wheel is connected to the shaft. This shaft is what is rotating the worm fear inside the block. The worm is fixed so when it is spun, the block is moved and motion from the gear transmits to the pitman arm, which then causes the wheels to turn. Power steering can be installed into this type of rack and usually is for cars, which still use this mechanism.
A Chrysler power steering rack on the other hand uses a rack-and-pinion system. A rack-and-pinion system is enclosed in a metal tube with each end of the rack sticking out from the tube. A tie rod connects to each end of the rack. The pinion gear is attached to the steering shaft. When you turn your steering wheel the pinion gear will spin and move the rack. The tie rods connected to each end of the rack connects to the steering arm on a spindle.
In the Chrysler power steering rack the power steering pump is contained in a cylinder with a piston in the middle connecting to the rack. The rack has two fluid ports on both sides of the piston. Higher pressure fluid on one side of the piston forces the piston to move and provides the power assist to the system. What the pump is doing is delivering pressurized hydraulic fluid to either side of the steering mechanism to help you steer the car and reduce the steering effort you need to make when driving.
