History of BMW

BMW, which stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke AG, is a German automobile manufacturer. It was established in 1916 and is headquartered in Munich, Germany. Franz Josef Popp was considered to be the driving force behind the company’s development and is therefore credited as the company’s founder.

BMW, along with Audi and Mercedes-Benz, is part of the "German Big 3" luxury automobile manufacturers. BMW started out as a restructured aircraft manufacturer. The Treaty of Versailles forced the company to cease production during World War I. After the War, it began manufacturing motorcycles in 1923. In 1928, BMW rolled out its first automobile, the Dixi, which was based on the Austin 7. And shortly after, the first BMW parts were available to buy.

BMW designed its own car, the 3/20, in 1932. However, the company was forced to shift its focus to aircraft and aeroengines during the Nazi regime. The company’s production suffered a setback when the manufacturing plants at Munich were heavily bombed towards the end of the World War II. It was not until 1951 that BMW released its first post-war automobile, the 501. The 1950s also saw the company manufacture its first bubble-car, the Isetta. The BMW 1500, a four-door touring car, released in 1961 re-established BMW as a successful carmaker. The 1500 is considered a forerunner to the modern-day minivan and touring vehicles.

The following years saw the company regain its foothold in the automobile market starting with the release of the "New Six" sedans in 1968. Current successful models of the brand include the 3 series, 4 Series Coupe, and M8.
