The Brake Master Cylinder, a component typically fitted in the engine compartment, powers the brake system by creating pressure on the hydraulic fluid inside it. It is provided with a removable cap to add brake fluid, and excess fluid is stored in a reservoir. While pressing the brake pedal, the master cylinder exerts force against the fluid that is incompressible. This fluid then passes to the brakes through a series of tubes.
In automobiles with disc brakes, the fluid helps in braking by causing a caliper to press against a piston. This results in the brake pads clamping the rotor, preventing it from moving. In vehicles with drum brakes, the fluid flows through the wheel cylinder, forcing the brake shoes to push against the wheel drum. This causes the wheel to stop or slow down. As the brake pedal is released, the fluid flows back to the reservoir. Most brake master cylinders consist of two chambers, each of them operating on a set of wheels. This construction allows the brakes to work on one set of wheels, even if the other fails.
If the brake pedal fails to return to its normal position after it is floored, it may be a symptom of a bad brake master cylinder. If there is a hydraulic fluid leak, the brake will continue to sink even after the brake pedal is released, indicating the failure of the brake master cylinder. A visible indication of a bad brake master cylinder is the lighting up of the brake warning light on the dashboard. You should replace a faulty brake master cylinder, to avoid further damage to your vehicle's braking system.
