That part number does not match anything we have available, but 82-70032 does have a 36-spline 3/4" input shaft, and it fits a ton of 1970's GM vehicles. This gearbox is pretty common for swaps, and is known as a Saginaw 505.

82-00278 is a steering gearbox, not a pump. 82-00278 AN is a brand new, stock replacement gearbox with no core deposit. 82-00278 R, Q2, Q3 and Q4 are remanufactured and will have a core deposit applied at checkout. The core deposit is fully refundable if you return your original gearbox to us, and we will include a prepaid return shipping label in the box.

Yes, this gearbox (82-00278) fits all 1964-1976 Chevelle with factory power steering. It's supposed to fit and feel just like OEM, but it will likely feel firmer and tighter than your worn-out original gearbox.

The input shaft is 0.8" in diameter, and has 31 splines. Don't have a spline count for the output shaft, but it's 1.25" in diameter.

This gearbox (82-70031 AN) is our own brand, which we manufacture. It's guaranteed to fit and perform exactly the same as OEM, and is backed by the same one year, unlimited mileage warranty.

We don't regularly carry a quick-ratio version of this gearbox, but if you send us a direct email via the "Contact Us" link, we can check with our rebuilder to see if that's something they can make so we can add it to our catalog.

We have not tested that to confirm if it's an easy swap. You can compare photos of the power and manual gearboxes to see if the mounting points are the same, and if they are, then it will likely work as long as you order a coupler and pitman arm from a manual-steering model.

Power steering on old VW's is very tough; since the power steering pump would be powered by the engine at the rear of the car, you'd have to run power steering lines all the way up to the front. This gearbox (82-70031 R) is a remanufactured OEM part with the same steering ratio as your original gearbox; about 24:1. We also have a 16:1 quick ratio version available here:

This gearbox (82-70031) has a 3/4" input shaft with 25 splines and a flat spot. The output is 1.124" with 32 splines.

A quick-ratio steering gearbox means that the front wheels will turn more, using the same amount of steering input. The total range of motion is unaffected, so it's not like your wheels will turn any sharper. This is a common upgrade on older vehicles because a quick-ratio box will bolt up like OEM, but the steering response will be a little quicker, so the handling will be improved, especially if your original gearbox is worn-out.

This is a stock replacement gearbox for trucks that left the factory with manual steering, and it would fit your original pitman arm or any other stock replacement. We cannot guarantee fitment on models that left the factory with power steering.

Which seals are you referring to? Every steering box we sell is complete and ready to bolt right in, with brand new seals for the case and input/output shafts. Seals for the power steering lines are not included, but we do recommend replacing them at the same time.

This quick-ratio gearbox (82-70032 NQ) has a 16:1 steering ratio (about 4.5 turns lock-to-lock), versus 24:1 (6.5 LTL) for the original box.

This gearbox is only tested and verified to fit models with manual steering from the factory. If you are looking to convert from power to manual steering, we advise doing some independent research, usually on forums for owners of your specific vehicle, to see what exactly is required for the swap. If it's a vehicle like yours that offerred both power and manual steering, usually the gearbox fits, but you may also need a pitman arm, steering coupler or some other steering linkage from a manual-steering model.
