Kenworth was started by brothers George and Louis Gerlinger, in Washington, United States. It was established in 1912 as Gerlinger Motor Car Works, a car and truck dealership firm. In 1915, it launched its first truck, the Gersix, with a six-cylinder engine. It was the first firm to introduce such an engine in a truck. It came to be known as Kenworth Motor Truck Company in 1923. From 1926, the company started manufacturing buses. In 1933, Kenworth became the first firm in the United States to make the diesel engine as standard equipment in its trucks. Kenworth was acquired by Pacific Car and Foundry Company (PACCAR) in 1945. As a subsidiary of PACCAR, Kenworth mainly manufactures medium and heavy-duty Class 8 trucks. The C500, T440, K500, T2000 are some of the notable models of Kenworth.
Kenworth also produces Class 5, Class 6 and Class 7 trucks. 2007 saw the introduction of a more aerodynamic version of the T600, the T660. A Kenworth Semi-truck was seen in James Bond's movie “Licence to Kill”.
