The Mercury Capri was marketed in the U.S. as three different cars for 30 years. Mercury was a division of Ford Motor Company founded by Edsel Ford in 1938. Its headquarters were situated in Dearborn, Michigan. Mercury Eight was the first car to be released by the brand. This proved to be a huge hit and was sold out in large numbers. In the 1950s, the brand established itself as a maker of stylish and efficient vehicles. The 1960s saw the introduction of the Mercury Comet and Meteor. In the 1970s, Mercury responded to the oil crisis by releasing the Comet and Bobcat models. Mercury expanded its lineup in the '80s, and the 1986 Mercury Sable became a huge hit. Mercury's sales soared in the 1990s with the launch of minivans and SUVs. The company sales slumped in 2008 and in 2011, Ford decided to discontinue the brand.
The Mercury Capri was rolled out in three different generations: 1970-1977, 1979-1986 and 1991-1994 as the super coupe, pony car and roadster, respectively. It was powered by an I4/I6/V6/V8 engine and a 4-speed or 5-speed automatic/manual transmission.
