The Cylinder Head and Gasket Set Kits contain your vehicle's cylinder heads and their respective gaskets. The cylinder head is a part of an internal combustion engine that is fitted above the cylinders of the engine on the cylinder block. It is usually mounted with the spark plugs, fuel injectors and valves. The cylinder has a set of ports or tracts through which the fuel-air mixture and the exhaust gases flow in and out, respectively. Water-cooled engines also include tracts and passages for the coolant to flow and transfer the excess heat out of the engine. Overhead valve engine (OHV) heads are fitted with the intake and exhaust poppet valves and the spark-plugs. The valves are controlled by the engine's camshaft that is fitted inside the cylinder block. In the overhead cam valve (OHC) design, the head has the same components as that of the OHV, with the difference being that the camshaft is also mounted within the cylinder head.
The cylinder head gasket, which is fitted between the engine block and the cylinder head, is a critical piece of sealing. It prevents the engine oil and coolant from leaking into the cylinder. As the engine needs a perfect ratio of air and fuel to run efficiently, it is essential for the mixture entering the cylinder to be free of any extraneous substances. The head gasket, therefore, should be maintained and checked periodically for any damage. The gaskets are usually made of a three-layered steel or copper. The outer surface of the steel gaskets are coated with an adhesive to ensure a tight fitting between the block and the cylinder heads. The copper gaskets are usually o-ringed so that they can fit securely around the head.
If your car's cylinder head is damaged or faulty, it would have a debilitating effect on your vehicle's performance. A cracked cylinder or gasket can cause the coolant to enter the combustion chamber, which can result in a plugged oil ring and a lowered fuel economy. An early sign of a blown gasket or cracked head is white smoke coming out of your exhaust when you start your vehicle. Additionally, if your car's engine overheats frequently, you should have the cylinder head and gaskets checked out and replaced at the earliest.
