Drive Axle

A drive axle is a central shaft for rotating the wheels and it is powered by the engine. A drive axle's location determines whether the vehicle is all-wheel drive, front-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive. It is a split axle with differential and universal joints between two half axles.

While making turns, your car wheels do not turn at the same speed. The inner wheel slows down to cover less distance and the outer wheel speeds up, allowing the car to move smoothly. In trucks and rear-wheel drive cars, the engine turns a drive shaft through which rotational force is transmitted to a drive axle at the rear.
