EGR Valve

EGR Valve

EGR Valve

The EGR Valve (Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve) helps to reduce the nitrous oxide emissions from your vehicle. When the engine burns fuel at a high temperature, nitrogen and oxygen are combined to form nitrous oxide, a noxious pollutant that is detrimental to the environment. The EGR valve reduces this emission by redirecting the exhaust back to the air intake valve to bring down the combustion temperature. Earlier vehicles used a vacuum EGR valve which relied on the exhaust backpressure to open or close. During high speeds or full throttle, the exhaust backpressure pushes on the control valve to close it, and opens the EGR valve to pull the exhaust gases into the air intake.

When the car is at idle, the backpressure reduces, keeping the control valve open and the EGR valve closed. In fuel-injected vehicles, the EGR valve is controlled by the engine control unit (ECU), which relies on the inputs from various sensors to dictate the valve function. In the differential pressure EGR valve, the sensors calculate the difference in pressure above and below the valve. This difference in pressure enables the ECU to calculate the exact amount of EGR flow.

If your car experiences a rough idle or stalls when accelerating, it could be due to a defective EGR valve that has not closed properly. An EGR valve that does not open and close at the right time will cause your vehicle to consume more fuel than necessary. Other symptoms include overheating and knocking in the engine at higher speeds. If your vehicle displays any of the above mentioned symptoms, you should consider checking your EGR valve. At Buy Auto Parts we stock a wide variety of EGR valves for every car make and model.
