Engine Oil Pan

The Engine Oil Pan, also called a sump, is a reservoir or space where the lubricating oil is collected after circulating through the automotive system. There are two types of oil pans: wet and dry sump. The wet sump system uses an internal reservoir in the engine's crankcase as the oil pan to collect the used oil. This oil pan has a capacity to hold four to six quarts of oil. The oil is then pumped back to the engine by the oil pump Owing to the size of the reservoir, the wet sump system requires the engine to be mounted higher in order to make enough space for the reservoir. This system is mostly used in production cars, but is highly unsuitable for race-cars. Turning, accelerating or braking a car with a wet sump can cause the crankshaft to dip into the oil that pools on one side of the engine.

In a dry sump system, the oil pan is mounted externally. The oil is drained into a shallow pan from where a scavenge pump removes it to the external reservoir. The oil, which is cooled and dried (water is removed from the mixture), is this pumped back to the engine by the pressure pump. The scavenge and pressure pumps are belt driven and are usually mounted on a single shaft. Owing to the thinner engine oil pan used in this system, the engine can be mounted lower, leaving the external reservoir to be mounted elsewhere in the car. The dry system is also not susceptible to oil movement problems that are present in wet systems. Therefore, the dry sump system can be used in racing cars and high-performance vehicles.

A damaged engine oil pan is usually the cause for oil leaks in your vehicle. The engine oil pan can be easily damaged over time due to rust or due to hitting an obstruction on the road or a curb while driving. In such cases, you should replace your engine oil pan to prevent any further oil leakage. At Buy Auto Parts we stock a wide variety of engine oil pans for every car make and model.
