Fuel Pressure Regulator

Fuel Pressure Regulator

The Fuel Pressure Regulator is a device that helps to maintain the constant fuel pressure needed by the injector nozzle. This is achieved by means of a spring, inside the regulator housing, that pushes on a diaphragm. The amount of pressure exerted by the spring is preset during manufacture. The fuel pump, therefore, pumps enough fuel with the right amount of pressure to overcome the constant pressure exerted by the spring. A vacuum hose that is attached to the regulator determines the fuel pressure by causing a rise or a drop in the vacuum in relation to the fuel demand. A fuel-return line sends the excess fuel back to the fuel tank.

When the car is in idle, the vacuum in the intake manifold keeps the fuel from reaching the injector. When the throttle is pressed, the vacuum drops off momentarily and causes the fuel injectors to open for a longer time. The fuel pump catches up with the pressure drop and releases the right amount of fuel to the injector. The location of the fuel pressure regulator depends on the make of the car. Some brands mount the regulator in the fuel rail, while others mount it inside the fuel tank.

A faulty fuel pressure regulator can lower your car's fuel efficiency and increase your vehicle's emissions or can cause your engine to stall or misfire. If your engine stalls or surges when you're driving, it is a possible indicator of a fault in the fuel system. At Buy Auto Parts we stock a wide variety of fuel pressure regulators for every car make and model.
