Fuel Pump Relay

Fuel Pump Relay

The Fuel Pump Relay is a device that controls the fuel pump during engine start-up. After the engine starts running, the fuel pump is taken over by an oil pressure mechanism. In essence, the fuel pump relay provides the necessary electrical power required for the fuel pump to run in the period between the start-up till the point where there is enough oil pressure to run the fuel pump. The relay is re-introduced into the circuit when the engine is turned off to induce the fuel pump to stop working.

The fuel pump relay has a magnetic coil with an open contact. When the ignition is turned on, the open contact closes, thereby closing the circuit between the fuel pump relay and the terminal for the electronic control mechanism. A ballast resistor bank connected to the same terminal speeds up the current flow to all the injector solenoids. The relay usually comes in a plastic housing and is usually located near the dashboard, under the steering wheel or on the firewall.

If your car's engine is cranking, but fails to power up or there's a delay in the starting of your engine, it's a possible sign of a failed fuel pump relay. The pump relay produces a humming sound when the ignition is turned on. If you do not hear this sound when you start your vehicle, you should check your pump relay. A bad relay can lead to severe damage to your car's ignition system and engine. At Buy Auto Parts we stock a wide variety of fuel pump relays for every car make and model.
