GMC, a manufacturer of pickup and commercial trucks, buses and SUVs, is a subsidiary of the American automaker, General Motors. When GM bought the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company in 1909, it formed the basis for the GMC Truck Company. Following the merger of the Reliance Motor Car Company with GM, the GMC Truck Company was formally established in 1912. The brand's first trucks made their debut at the New York International Auto Show. In 1916, a GMC Truck drove from Seattle to New York in 30 days and later in 1926, a GMC truck covered the distance between New York and San Francisco in 5 days and 30 minutes. Following the Second World War, GMC partially bought out the Chicago-based bus-manufacturer, Yellow Coach in 1925, and gained full-ownership in 1943.

In 1937, GMC manufactured the Suburban, a station wagon that was developed into an SUV in later generations and is still in production. The C/K series of full-size pickup trucks was released in 1960. In 1969, GMC rolled out the Astro series of heavy-duty trucks. The Jimmy was a mid-size SUV that hit the markets in 1970. The same year also saw the release of the Suburban, which was an updated version of the Sprint. In 1991, the brand released the Sonoma and the Syclone into their heavy-duty truck lineup. The Envoy, released in 1998, was an upgraded version of the Jimmy. In the late 2000s, the Terrain and the Acadia were rolled out. Some of the well-known models of this brand are the Sonoma, Typhoon and Sierra.
