How Much Does a Drive Axle Cost?
Drive axles go by many names, including half shaft or CV joint, and they are a common replacement item, primarily on front or all-wheel-drive vehicles. CV (constant velocity) axles connect the drive wheels of a vehicle to the transmission (or front differential on a 4WD truck/SUV), and they’re able to flex and bend while still spinning, meaning the transmission can still spin the wheels while the suspension is in motion or the front wheels are steering. This often-ignored repair is actually fairly simple and relatively inexpensive, so there’s no reason to put it off longer than needed.
A constant-velocity drive shaft is actually a large assembly, with multiple parts. The driveshaft part itself is simple enough; just a metal shaft that connects the wheel to the drivetrain. Each end of it has a CV joint, which allows the shaft to bend and flex as needed, based on the motions of the vehicle. Each CV joint has a rubber boot covering it, to protect it from the elements and keep grease inside from leaking and drying out. You typically only have to replace your drive axles if the CV joint is damaged from lack of lubrication, and that usually results from the CV boots tearing or leaking. You can spot a damaged CV joint from the telltale clicking sound it makes when turning, or by inspecting the boots to see if they are leaking.
CV Axle Labor and Part Costs
If you spot a torn CV boot or grease leak early enough, you can usually replace the boots without issue. The problem there is that the CV axle has to come off to do this job anyway, then you have to add the right amount of the correct grease, and re-seal it with new boots. You also never know how long the CV boots have been leaking, and what kind of damage has already happened to the joints inside. That’s why the industry standard is now, for the most part, to replace the entire CV axle with a premium quality aftermarket unit. Labor costs are lower since you don’t have to spend time reconditioning the original axle, the part cost increase is less than you’d expect, and you have the peace of mind of having a brand new part under your car, instead of a hastily re-sealed used item. How to Save Money on Axles?
Replacing your drive axle can be done relatively inexpensively. Most CV axles are around $100 each, but you can save money buying them in pairs. Replacing them is fairly straightforward as well; they’re easily accessible from under the vehicle. You’ll have to unbolt the CV axle from the hub carrier assembly, but this provides a good opportunity to inspect your vehicle for anything else that could use some attention. It’s also a good idea to replace the axle seals along with the axles; these are located in the transmission or differential’s opening that the axle slides into, meaning 99% of the labor to replace them is already part of replacing your axles, and the seals themselves are inexpensive. Most mechanics will charge about an hour of labor for each side.
