How Much Does An AC Compressor Cost

How Much Does a Car AC Compressor Cost?

Hundreds of parts and components have to work together for your car to function properly. The AC compressor in your car will last a long time, if carefully maintained. However, things can start to malfunction, especially in older cars. If there is ever any issue with your AC compressor you should have it checked as soon as possible to avoid further damages. If you do not, the repair cost of your AC Compressor can increase immensely.

Labor and Part Costs

The labor cost alone for an AC compressor can range from $300 to $500, depending on what car you have. You can save some money by purchasing a remanufactured AC compressor for around $100, though a used or refurbished AC compressor won’t last as long as a new one.  We always recommend purchasing a new AC compressor.  It will save you money in the long run.

A new AC compressor may cost a few hundred dollars more, anywhere from $200 to $600, but it’s better to spend a little more now than a lot more later. A remanufactured compressor or one you get from the junkyard has a much higher possibility of failure which can contaminate the whole system.  This could lead you to having to replace all the parts in your AC system.

Get an Estimate

To get a more accurate estimate of the full cost of replacing an AC compressor, you should take your car into a certified mechanic. Get an estimate from them of the cost of the parts and the labor.

Save Money On A Replacement AC Compressor

Ask the mechanic for the exact part numbers of the parts they will be installing.  Then tell them thank you for the estimate and go home.  Search for the part numbers online and buy the parts for the same price you mechanic gets them for.  Cut out the middleman and avoid the mark-up.  Then take the parts you buy online into your mechanic and have them install it.
