The Mass Air Flow Sensor Probe is a device that measures the mass of air passing through it. They are used almost exclusively in fuel injected vehicles. It is fitted within the intake manifold and its output is used by the engine control unit (ECU) to determine the correct amount of fuel that needs to be injected to the cylinders. The output of the MAF sensor probe in conjunction with that of the oxygen sensor help the ECU determine an accurate air-fuel ratio. There are two types of air flow sensors: vane meter sensor probe and hot wire sensor probe.

The vane meter sensor probe, also known as volume air flow (VAF) sensor probe has a spring-loaded paddle/vane that is attached to a variable resistor. The sensor probe's output is determined based on the movement of the vane with respect to the airflow. The vane's displacement creates a potential difference across the resistor. This voltage is sent to the ECU to determine the amount of fuel to be injected in the cylinder. The hot wire sensor probe has a heated wire which is kept heated by a constant current flowing through it. The wire is suspended in the engine's air stream and when air flows over the wire, it cools the wire, reducing the resistance of the wire and increasing the current flowing through the wire. This change in current is sent to the ECU to determine the right fuel-air ratio.

If the air flow sensor probe fails, the ECU will be unable to determine the right amount of fuel to be injected, leading to lowered efficiency and fuel economy. The airflow sensor probe is susceptible to damage if the air filter is dirty, causing it to misread the amount of air flowing through the manifold.
