History of Merkur Cars & Parts

Merkur was a short-lived marque of the Ford Motor Company from 1985 to 1989. It had its headquarters at Dearborn, Michigan. Only two models, XR4Ti and Scorpio, were released during the brand's existence, neither of which fared well in the North American market. Both these models were assembled in Germany. These cars were marketed solely by Lincoln-Mercury dealers. The XR4TI was conceived by the company's Vice President, Bob Lutz. It was the North American variant of Ford Europe's Sierra. It was one of Ford's attempts to import their top European models into the American market. A combination of factors - such as increasing exchange rates and new safety regulations that were enforced in 1990 - caused the sales of the XR4Ti to fall.

The Merkur Scorpio, which was based off its European variant, the Ford Scorpio, was introduced in 1987. It was a 5-door hatchback executive car. It had standard features such as an Automatic Climate Control and the optional Touring Package upgrade. The Scorpio was, however, close in appearance to the Mercury Topaz and Sable which were comparatively cheaper. In 1989, owing to poor sales and the costs involved in converting the cars to meet the US safety regulations, Ford announced the discontinuation of the Merkur brand.
