Replacement ECU



Replacement ECU is short for replacement engine control unit. The replacement ECU is a small computer which overlooks all major operations of an internal combustion engine. Modern cars have many sensors. The readings from each sensor come back to the replacement ECU which analyzes the information. Think of the replacement ECU as the brain of an engine.

Inside the replacement ECU is where the decisions are made. The replacement ECU determines iginition timing, the amount of fuel injected, the proper air to fuel ratio, etc. Replacement ECU also monitors the idle engine speed. More modern car designs have variable valve timing and electronic valve timing, both of which are managed by the replacement ECU. There are programmable ECUs available as well. However, these rarely come factory installed because they require intimate knownledge of the internal combustion engine, way beyond the scope of an average car owner, in order to program. This is why all consumer cars have a proprietary replacement ECU.
