Shock or Strut Mount

Shock or Strut Mount

Shock or Strut Mount

Shock or Strut Mounts are part of your vehicle's suspension system and are used to secure the shock-absorbers and struts in place. The shock-absorber prevents your vehicle from bouncing when it rides over an irregularity in the surface, while a strut keeps your car at the right height from above the ground. The strut mount keeps the strut attached to the vehicle. One side of the mount is bolted to the vehicle's chassis, while the other side is attached to the strut. In between the two ends of the strut, is a piece of insulating rubber. As the vehicle moves, the mount cushions the impact of the up and down motion and prevents the vibrations and nose from being felt in the vehicle.

The shock mounts secure the shock absorber to the chassis and suspension of the car. The upper mount is connected to the frame of the car, while the lower mount is attached to the axle. When your vehicle runs over a bump or pothole, the energy from the coil spring is transferred to the upper mount of the shock-absorber, right down to the piston in the shock absorber which then provides the necessary hydraulic action to ensure that the vehicle does not jar due to the Impact caused by the bump/dip in the road.

You should periodically check the struts and shocks to ensure that they are properly functioning. A simple test to check if your struts and shocks are fine is to bounce your vehicle by pushing on each corner above the wheels. If your vehicle continues to bounce, instead of stopping after you release it, it is a possibility the shock or strut mounts are worn or damaged. Over time the rubber insulating in the strut mount can lose its elasticity and fail to cushion the vehicle from jarring and noise. If you hear a clunking noise or experience a loose or stiff steering, it is likely that your strut or shock mounts need to be checked out and replaced. At Buy Auto Parts we stock a wide variety of shock or strut mounts for every car make and model.
