Torque Converters

The Torque Converters are a part of the automatic transmission system. They have a similar function to that of the clutch in a manual transmission,i.e. to keep the car moving and to keep the engine running even when the car has stopped. The torque converter uses a fluid coupling to keep the engine spinning independently of the transmission. The torque converter has four major components: the pump, turbine, stator and the transmission fluid. The converter housing is attached to the flywheel of the engine and rotates at the same speed as the engine. A centrifugal fluid pump, housed inside the converter, pumps the transmission fluid away from the center towards the blades of the turbine, causing it to spin.

As the turbine is connected to the transmission, its rotational motion is transferred to the transmission, causing your vehicle to move. The stator is fitted in the center of the torque converter. Its main function is to keep the transmission fluid from returning to the pump from the turbine. The stator blades rotate in a direction opposite to that of the fluid, thus preventing the fluid from hitting the pump. The stator, therefore, increases the efficiency of the torque converter.

A failure in the torque converter can have an adverse effect on your vehicle's transmission. A faulty converter would result in a loss of power and can cause the transmission gears to slip due to the reduction in flow of the transmission fluid. Your vehicle may also experience surges even if you are coasting at a steady speed. The transmission will also fail to shift gear smoothly and efficiently when the vehicle is put in drive. If your vehicle experiences any of the aforementioned symptoms, you should get the torque converter checked out and replace it if it is damaged. At Buy Auto Parts we stock a wide variety of torque converters for every car make and model.
