More info

The Transmission is one of the most crucial part of your car's mechanism. It is responsible for keeping your car moving at different speeds by transferring the rotational power of the engine to the wheels. It consists of the gear-box, which consists of the gears, and the gear-trains that can be shifted when the car changes speed. The transmission converts the high rpm of the engine to a lower rpm needed for the wheels. There are two types of transmissions based on the means by which the gears are switched for different speeds: manual and automatic.

In manual transmissions, the gear shifting depends on the driver's choice. It uses a clutch that can be engaged or disengaged to regulate the transfer of the engine's motion to the transmission. The manual transmission contains a constantly rotating mesh of gears that are mounted on the main shaft and the layshaft. When the driver changes the gear, a dog collar, which can slide along the main shaft, locks the selected gear to the main shaft. In an automatic transmission, the torque converter connects your engine to the transmission and thereby to your car's wheels. The gear change in the automatic transmission is managed via a set of compound planetary gears that produces all the gear ratios needed for the different speeds of your car. The final gear ratio depends on the combination of stationary and engaged gears in the planetary gearset.

If your transmission fluid is leaking or if you find that your vehicle fails to stay in higher gears, it is possible that your manual transmission needs to be checked out. Other symptoms to look out for are a clanging noise when your car is in idle or a difficulty in shifting gears. In automatic transmissions, if the transmission slips in and out of gear or spins without any movement from the vehicle, you should check the automatic transmission.
