ROAD TRIP 2: HOW TO PREPARE YOUR CAR FOR A LONG ROAD TRIP

May 29, 2013 - Going on a long road trip can be fun and exciting, but before embarking on your journey, you must make sure your car is prepared to take the trip. Making sure your car is ready to take the long trip is very important if you want to avoid any possible problems with your car while you’re out on the road. Having general maintenance done on your car prior to your trip will save you a lot of worry, and possible repair expenses during your vacation.

Here are some tips on how to prepare your car for a long road trip.

Check Brakes

Have your brakes checked out. Brakes are one of the most important safety features on your car. If any worn out brake pads are discovered, have them replaced immediately before going on your trip to prevent brake failure and avoid accidents.

Check Windshield Wiper Blades and Fluid

Make sure your windshield wipers are working properly and fluid is topped off. Be sure and replace thin, worn wiper blades to make sure the windshield wipers are fully working. The last thing you want is to get caught in a downpour without the ability to wipe your windshield clean. I think we can all agree that being able to see out your windshield is a pretty important thing.

Check Oil, Fluid Levels, Belts, and Hoses

Let your mechanic know that you’re going on a long road trip and perform a general check of your fluid levels, belts, hoses, and top off any low fluids.

Check Tires

Make sure your tires have the appropriate air pressure, inspect them for any bulges, nails, or worn tread. If it’s near the time for your regularly scheduled tire maintenance procedures, go ahead and have them performed before taking your car on a long road trip.

Check A/C or Heating System

Make sure your air conditioning and/or heating system is properly functioning to ensure that everybody will be comfortable on a long road trip. If taking a road trip during the summer, it’s especially important to make sure the A/C is working to make sure no one overheats during a long road trip.
