Air Pump

Air Pump

Air Pump

The Air Pump is a part of a secondary air injection system which is a means of vehicle emissions reduction. The air pump pumps air into the exhaust manifold to completely burn the exhaust gases. It supplements the action of the catalytic converter by working on the extra-rich exhaust and raising the temperature of the catalytic converter to its operating temperature. Once the engine is running, the air pump aids in emission reduction by oxidizing the unburned hydrocarbons. The pump is belt-driven or electric motor-driven.

The air pump draws air into its compressor through thin, curved blades called vanes. The air enters the pump through a screen filter to remove the large particles of dirt that could damage the pump system. This compressed air is then pushed through steel nozzles to the injection points in the exhaust manifold. The pump has a check-valve that stops the back-flow of the exhaust gases into the pump system. Another valve, known as the diverter valve, prevents the effects of explosive combustion of raw fuel content in the exhaust of carbureted engines. The diverter valve diverts the air pump's outlet to the atmosphere or to the engine air cleaner.

The air pump can wear out over time, causing your vehicle to run below efficiency with an increase in its emissions. A faulty pump will lead the oxygen sensor in the exhaust to misread the oxygen content as "rich", and thereby reduce the air-fuel mixture entering the engine. If you sense a delay in accelerating or hear a howling noise near the exhaust pipe, it is possible that your car air pump needs to be checked out. Additionally, during an emissions test, if the level of carbon monoxide is high, your air pump may be the culprit. The air pump should be replaced to ensure that your car meets the emissions standards. At Buy Auto Parts we stock a wide variety of air pumps for every car make and model.
