Air Brake Compressor
The Air Brake Compressor is a part of the air-brake systems, that are primarily used in buses and trucks. The main function of the compressor is to pump compressed air into the air reservoirs before it is used by the air-brake system. The air brake system uses compressed air to generate the pressure needed to push on the brake pad. The compressor draws the air from the atmosphere and pushes it into the air reservoirs at a high pressure of about 120 psi. It is either driven by the engine through the crankshaft via a pulley-belt system or directly by the timing gears. The compressor is cooled by the engine's cooling mechanism or is air-cooled.
The pressurized air entering the air tanks is regulated by the air compressor governor, which stops the compressor from working when the pressure reaches the cut-out level (120-125 psi). When the pressure drops to the cut-in level (100 psi), the governor induces the compressor to pump again. A safety valve is fitted in between the compressor and the first reservoir to protect the system from over-pressurization; it is set to open at 150 psi. A faulty compressor will result in a loss of air pressure in the brake system, causing the brake system to fail. When the pressure falls to a low level, a warning buzzer goes off or a mechanical "wig-wag" arm drops into the view of the driver.
A faulty compressor can also cause oil and other contaminants to mix with the air entering the system. A loud clanking noise could indicate a fault with the driving gear or pulley of the compressor. Since it is usually driven by the engine, a defective air brake compressor could eventually damage your engine as well. If your air brake compressor is damaged, you should replace it at the earliest.
