Brake Pad Sensor

Brake Pad Sensor

Brake Pad Sensor

The Brake Pad Sensor is an electronic device that is mounted in the brake pads of your vehicle. Its purpose is to alert the driver when the brake pads become too worn out and thin to work effectively. The sensor is a U-shaped copper wire that tracks the condition of the brake pads and lights up an indicator on the dashboard when the brake pads need to be changed. The brake pad sensor is mounted vertically in the pad material. As the pad material wears off, the first arm of the U shaped wire breaks off on contact with the rotor. The ECU begins to record the mileage from this point on, to estimate when the second arm of the "U" will reach the rotor. This alerts the driver that the brake pads are close to reaching the point where they need to be changed.

As the brake pad material continues to wear off, the second arm of the U-shaped sensor hits the rotor and lights up the brake pad replacement warning on your dashboard, indicating that it is time to change your brake-pads. The ECU waits for two events - the breaking of the two wires in the sensor - before lighting up the warning signal on the dashboard. You should not replace your brake pad before the second wire is cut, as this would result in an incorrect signal from the ECU.

If the brake pad sensor connectors are faulty, it would cause your brake-pad warning to light up or flicker even if the brake-pads do not need to be changed. In addition, a faulty sensor can also fail to alert you of brake-pad wear. You should replace a faulty brake pad sensor to avoid changing your brake-pads before time or to avoid damaging your braking system due to a worn out brake pad or motor.
