The Ford ignition coil is part of the Ford ignition system. The Ford ignition system is a system for igniting a fuel-air mixture in internal combustion engines like the gas powered ones in cars. The Ford ignition system has to work in perfect concert with the rest of the engine. This is because its goal is to ignite fuel at exactly the right time so that the expanding gases can do the maximum amount of work. If the Ford ignition system were to fire at the wrong time, power will fail and gas consumption and emissions can increase. When the fuel/air mixture in the cylinder burns, the temperature rises and the fuel is converted to exhaust gas. This transformation causes the pressure in the cylinder to increase dramatically and forces the piston down.
The Ford ignition coil is an induction coil that transforms the battery’s low voltage to the thousands of volts needed to create an electric spark in the spark plugs to ignite the fuel. Some of the Ford ignition coils have an internal resistor while others rely on a resistor wire or an external resistor to limit the current flowing into the coil from the cars 12-volt supply. Before, every ignition coil system required mechanical contact breaker points and a capacitor. But modern electronic ignition systems use a power transistor to provide pulses to the ignition coil.
In the modern electronically controlled ignition systems much smaller Ford ignition coils are used with one coil for each spark plug or one coil serving two spark plugs.
