Pontiac by Model
+Pontiac is a former American automobile marque that was owned by General Motors (GM). It was introduced to the American market in 1926 as a companion to General Motors' Oakland Division. The company's roots, however, begin with Pontiac Spring and Wagon Works, a company started by Albert G. North and Harry G. Hamilton in 1899. General Motors brought out the company in 1909. With its introduction in 1926, Pontiac quickly overtook its companion brand and by 1932, GM discontinued the Oakland brand. In 1942, automobile production was halted during the Second World War, and in 1946, the brand returned to the market with the introduction of upgraded versions of its 1942 models. The Chieftan, rolled out in 1949, was the brand's first new model. This was followed by the Catalina, a pillar-less hardtop coupe in 1950. The Bonneville, a full-size automobile, hit the markets in 1957.
Owing to the brand's styling and performance in this period, Motor Trend magazine selected the entire Pontiac line as its Car of the Year in 1959. In 1961, the company rolled out the LeMans, which was available as a compact and mid-size car. The GTO, released in the 1964, was America's first muscle car. The car remained in production till 1974 before it was revived again in 2004 as a captive import. The Firebird, a pony car, was released in 1967. The brand had to downsize its lineup during the Oil Crisis of the early 1970s. In 1975, it produced the Astre which was a variant of Chevrolet's Vega. In 1984, the brand produced the two-seater coupe, Fiero. The Trans Sport, released in 1990, was the company's first minivan and light-truck. It was replaced by the Montana in 1997. In 2009, GM announced the discontinuation of the Pontiac and the entire lineup was phased out by 2010. The Pontiac model lineup also included the Astre, Parisienne, Solstice and Torrent.
