Throttle Position Sensor
The car's Engine Control Unit (ECU) consists of various sensors that send signals to maintain high engine efficiency. The Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) is a sensor that works in combination with the car's ECU. As it has to monitor the position of the throttle, it is located on the butterfly spindle. The Throttle Position Sensor measures and reports the amount of throttle opening to the ECU. The ECU then calculates the amount of fuel to be injected into the engine.
The throttle opens when the gas pedal is pushed down, rotating the internal variable resistors of the sensors. The Throttle Position Sensor signals to the ECU, which varies according to the throttle position and opening, are used to inject the right amount of fuel to the engine. The throttle position sensor will not report the amount of throttle opening if it is not functioning properly. This will affect the acceleration and increase fuel consumption.
