Axle Actuator

The Axle Actuator is a device which activates the front axle when the driver switches from 2 wheel drive to 4 wheel drive. When the switch is turned on, the control module turns on an air-pump which is mounted near the front of the car. The pump begins to build pressure and eventually opens a relief valve. This pressure is then applied to a vacuum actuator which expands as the pressure builds up. This expanding actuator pushes against the bearing side of the internal gears, forcing them to engage with the gears in the front axle, thereby engaging the front wheel axle. Once the axle has been engaged, the relief valve is closed.

If the axle actuator is faulty, there will be a delay or failure in 4WD engagement. This could be because of a tear in the vacuum actuator's diaphragm or a fault in the vacuum hoses. An indicator of a possible fault in the actuator will be signified by a flashing 4WD engagement light on the dashboard.
