The Brake Booster is a component that multiplies the force applied on the brake pedal, to help you stop or slow down your vehicle. The brake booster gives more braking power with minimal pressure applied on the brake pedal. It is a metal canister that consists of a diaphragm and check valve. The check valve is a one-way valve which only allows air to be drawn out of the booster. It prevents air from entering the booster when the engine is turned off or if there is a leak in the vacuum hose.
A rod which passes through the center of the canister links the pedal linkage and the master cylinder. This rod actuates the master cylinder piston. Inside the booster, on both sides of the diaphragm, the engine creates a partial vacuum. When the brake pedal is pressed, the rod opens a valve. This seals off the vacuum and allows air to enter on one side of the diaphragm, causing an increase in pressure on that side of the diaphragm. This makes the rod push the master cylinder piston. When the brake pedal is released, the outside air supply is sealed off and the vacuum valve is reopened.
One of the common symptoms of a bad brake booster is a hard pedal that requires a greater pressure to stop the automobile. Additionally, the vehicle may roll for a short distance before coming to a complete stop if your brake booster has failed.
