Brake Caliper
Brake Caliper
The Brake Caliper is a part of the disc braking system. It is a small, rectangular, boxy component that slows down or stops the wheels from turning by applying the necessary force to the brake rotor. The brake caliper is fitted to either side of the rotor by means of metal pads. The rotors are in turn attached to the wheels. As the brake pedal is pressed, the hydraulic fluid passes through the master cylinder that is connected to a piston inside the caliper. The piston forces the metal pads against the rotors, creating a friction that stops or slows down the turning wheel.
There are two kinds of brake calipers: fixed and floating. The fixed brake caliper has pistons on both sides of the brake and it applies pressure on both sides. The floating brake caliper has one or two pistons on the inboard side of the brake and it moves in and out relative to the brake pedal.
The brake caliper sticks due to factors such as bad brake lines and a lack of proper lubrication. If the brake fluid is not replaced regularly, it will cause the brake caliper to stick. A sticky caliper causes severe steering and pulls the automobile forcefully towards the side with the stuck caliper. There will also be a noticeable decline in the mileage and efficiency of your car. If you experience any of the symptoms mentioned above, you should consider inspecting the brake caliper and replace it, if required.
