Crankshaft Sensor
Crankshaft Sensor
The Crankshaft Sensor is a part of your vehicle's internal combustion engine. It is an electronic device that resides is mounted on the flywheel, the camshaft or in the crankshaft. Its function is to monitor the rpm of the crankshaft to help the engine control unit (ECU) determine the engine rpm, ignition and fuel-injection timing.
The sensor is a magnetic pulse generator type sensor that is mounted next to a slotted disc. The slots on the disc correspond to the positions of the crankshaft. Whenever a slot comes in contact with the sensor, it generates a series of pulses. The frequency of the pulses are interpreted by the ECU to determine the RPM of the engine and to set the ignition and injection timings.
Over time, the sensor can burn out due to their exposure to high temperature conditions within the engine. If the crankshaft sensor fails, the ECU will fail to set the correct ignition and fuel injection timings. This would make your engine perform below par, causing it to misfire or stall after starting. You should replace a faulty crankshaft position sensor at the earliest to prevent your engine's efficiency from deteriorating.
