Just before the power stroke, the piston rises to full compression, pushing against the air drawn into the cylinder. This temporarily slows down the crankshaft. When the cylinder is ignited, the expanding air pushes the cylinder down at a rapid speed. Once all the fuel is burnt, the crankshaft slows down, again. This process causes a slight back-and-forth movement or oscillation in the crankshaft. This has a severe effect on diesel engines that have a high compression and large displacement for a given cylinder count.

The dual mass flywheel consists of a drum or heavy outer ring and a lighter center hub or disc. A set of long springs connects the center hub to the outer ring. The center hub is bolted to the crankshaft while the outer ring is connected to the transmission.

The most common symptom of a bad dual mass flywheel is gear slippage owing to excess friction or oil entering the flywheel assembly. Other symptoms include a chattering or rattling noise when the clutch is engaged and a failure or delay in acceleration when the gear is up-shifted.
