Fuel Filter

The Fuel Filter, as its name suggests, is used to filter or trap any debris or contaminants in the fuel. They are usually located between the fuel tank and the carburetor or the fuel injection system (in case of diesel engines). Unfiltered fuel can be detrimental to your car's running. The contaminants, which include paint chips or rust, can cause an abrasive intrusion when they flow in between the components of the engine. Pure, contaminant-free fuel can be effectively and completely burned and therefore, a fuel filter essentially ensures that your engine is kept running at its maximum efficiency. A fuel filter is usually consists of a heat-resistant paper mesh housed in a plastic or metal covering. They have an inlet and an outlet, each of which connects with the fuel line for the fuel to pass through and out of the filter.

In diesel engines, the filters usually have a bowl-shaped design to incorporate a water separator that is responsible for draining out the water from the fuel. As water is denser than diesel, it settles at the bottom of the filter cartridge, from where it is drained into a lower cavity called the drain bowl. This water needs to be drained out periodically through a valve. A water sensor which is mounted in the filter, is used to signal the ECU or the driver, through a light on the dashboard, about the presence of water in the filter. The fuel filter needs to be checked and changed at regular intervals as they tend to become clogged with contaminants. This clogging can cause a disruption in the fuel flow, thereby decreasing the efficiency of the engine.

If your engine is stalling or has a rough idle, it is likely because of a disrupted fuel flow due to a clogged filter. In such cases, it is vital that you should change your fuel filter at the earliest to avoid compromising your car's efficiency.
