Instrument Cluster
The Instrument Cluster, which is a part of your car's dashboard, is a set of all the instrumentation installed in your vehicle. This includes the speedometer, fuel indicator, temperature gauge and odometer. The main function of the instrument cluster is to aggregate data from various parts of the vehicle to be used by the engine control unit (ECU). Most modern vehicles today incorporate an analog speedometer along with a digital dashboard.
Digital speedometers were briefly used during the '80s and the '90s, but faced a lot of criticism owing to their limitations in comparison with analog speedometers. They were phased out during the late '90s in nearly all automobile brands except Renault and Citroen. However, in the 2000s, digital speedometers have been used in hybrid vehicles. The instrument cluster also includes the trip computer, a device that records and displays factors such as average speed, average distance travelled, and the average fuel consumption.
If any of the gauges in your instrument cluster malfunction, they could result in further problems especially in case of a faulty oil indicator reading or engine temperature reading. If the gauges in the cluster seem erratic and inaccurate in their readings, it is a likely indicator of a fault in the instrument cluster. Fluttering needles and flickering LCD displays are also indicative of a fault in the cluster. At Buy Auto Parts we stock a wide variety of instrument clusters for every car make and model.
