Oil Separator
The Oil Separator, also known as the air-oil separator or the AOS, is a part associated with your vehicle's engine. It is often available as an aftermarket component and its chief function is to remove oil present in the air. The air is then delivered to the engine's intake manifold and the oil is passed either to the crankcase or to a catch can. One of the most common kinds of oil separators or filters work by blowing the air through a mesh filter. The air passes through while oil remains in the mesh. In some kinds of separators, the air is made to pass via a tube that has holes in its sides. The air passes through the holes while the oil flows down to the bottom. A bad separator will cause an increase in the overall vacuum in the crankcase. In extreme conditions, a damaged separator fails to free oil from the air. In such a case, the oily air flows into the engine which may cause it to backfire. Sometimes, it forms an oily film in the air intake manifold, eventually restricting air flow into the engine, leading to a decrease in the its efficiency.
A damaged oil separator causes the engine check light to light up and produces huge amounts of white smoke in the automobile's exhaust. An audible symptom of a faulty separator is a high-pitched squealing noise from a running engine. If you find any of the aforementioned symptoms, it is time to give your oil separator a thorough check and replace it, if necessary.
