Pitman Arm
Pitman Arm
The Pitman Arm is a steering component used in a conventional parallelogram steering system. It links the steering box, which is located at the bottom of the steering wheel shaft, and the center link. The idler arm is attached to the other end of the center link. While turning the steering wheel, a worm gear, at the bottom of the steering shaft, turns a set of teeth. This action moves a gear that activates the Pitman arm. The Pitman arm moves the idler arm in a parallel rotating motion, thereby turning the wheels in the required direction.
Indications of a faulty Pitman arm include play in the steering wheel or hard steering due to the failure of the dust boot. Other symptoms include uneven tire wear due to improper alignment of the wheels and loose steering because of a worn out ball and socket. If you experience any of the symptoms mentioned above, you may need to replace your Pitman arm to prevent further damage to your car's steering system. At Buy Auto Parts we stock a wide variety of Pitman arm for every car make and model.
