Sway Bar

Sway Bar, a part of your vehicle's suspension system, prevents the car's body from rolling and keeps the car's body flat in a sharp turn. It is also known as anti-sway bar or anti-roll bar or stabilizer bar. The sway bar is a wide, U-shaped cylindrical steel bar that is connected to the left and right wheels with arms. The sway bar is attached to the arms by bushings, such that the bar rotates.

While making a sharp turn, the part of the car on the outside of the turn gets pushed down towards the road and the part on the inside of the turn raises up. The arm of the sway bar on the outside of the turn gets pushed upward and this applies pressure on the rod. The bar resists the pressure through its stiffness. This pressure moves the arm on the inside of the turn and causes the suspension on that side to compress as well. This series of actions makes the wheels of the car stay close to the road, thereby preventing rolling.

Indications of a faulty sway bar include tire tread wear due to overloading, and clunking or jingling noises due to damaged bushings while cornering or driving over slight bumps. You should replace your sway bar at the earliest to prevent possible damage to your car's suspension system. At Buy Auto Parts we stock a wide variety of sway bars for every car make and model.
