Trailing Arm

Trailing Arm

Trailing Arm

The Trailing Arm is a component of the vehicle's suspension system. It is the part that supports the coil springs and links the rear axle to the automobile chassis. The trailing arm is usually mounted forward of the rear axle and is perpendicular to it. It is attached to the chassis and axle by means of bushings. The function of the trailing arm is to provide a smoother ride over uneven terrain. The rigid trailing arm's up and down movement helps to maintain a smooth ride. However, it does not allow for lateral movement. This causes the wheels to lean to the outside of the turn while cornering at a high speed.

The semi-trailing arm is almost the same as the trailing arm, except that the arms which are located on the either side of the axle are pivoted at an angle between 50 and 70 degrees. While cornering, the pivoted angles have a canceling effect on each other, thereby preventing under-steering. The disadvantage of this kind of arm is that it alters the vertical (camber) angle of the wheels due to its up and down movement. Eventually, it causes uneven tire wear.

A faulty trailing arm will cause the vehicle to under-steer while cornering at a high speed. One of the common problems with a trailing arm is worn out bushings. You should replace the trailing arm to prevent possible damage to your car's suspension system. At Buy Auto Parts we stock a wide variety of trailing arms for every car make and model.
