Transfer Case
Transfer Case
The Transfer Case is a part of the four-wheel drive transmission. It is responsible for dividing the power received from the transmission between the front and rear-wheel axles. Transfer cases can also lock the front and rear driveshafts to allow both the front and rear wheels to deliver an equal amount of power to both the front and rear wheels. In current versions of transfer cases, the rear output is kept in line with the transmission output, which is then offset to feed the front axle. This offset is accomplished by means of a belt or a set of gears.
There are two types of transfer cases: part-time and full-time. Part-time cases can be shifted between 4-wheel and 2-wheel drives. This gives the driver the flexibility to choose the type of drive that is best suited for their road-conditions. Part-time transfer cases also have a set of additional gears called low-range gears that provide an extra torque at a low speed. This low range is used to navigate over steep hills and uneven terrain. Full-time transfer cases are continuously in four-wheel drive mode.
If the transfer case is damaged, you will hear a constant grinding or squealing noise from under your vehicle when it is running. A bad transfer case should be replaced to prevent any further damage to your car's transmission and axles. At Buy Auto Parts we stock a wide variety of transfer cases for every car make and model.
