Universal Joints

The Universal Joints, also called U-joints or universal coupling, is a part of your vehicle's transmission system. The U-joint is a special kind of joint that connects the driveshaft to the differential and the output shaft of the transmission or the transfer case. It consists of a pair of hinges that are oriented at 90o to each other, and connected by a cross shaft. This arrangement allows the rotary motion to be transferred between two shafts that are at an angle to each other. The joint transfers the rotational movement of the engine to the wheels of the car through the axle. Despite having different structures, the universal joint serves the same purpose in both front- and rear-wheel drive vehicles.

In front-wheel drive vehicles, the output shaft of the transmission is coupled to the front wheels on both ends through a constant-velocity joint (CV) joint, that is similar to the U-joint, except that in addition to the rotary movement, it also moves from side to side. In rear-wheel drive vehicles, a single drive-shaft connects the rear-axle to the gearbox. The joint allows the rear axle to move up and down with respect to the gearbox without snapping the drive-shaft. While there are no visible indicators of a damaged u-joint, a clicking noise while turning or vibration while accelerating are signs of a possibly damaged u-joint.

If your universal joints are damaged, you should get them replaced at the earliest to prevent your transmission system from sustaining further damage. At Buy Auto Parts we stock a wide variety of universal joints for every car make and model.
