How To Pick The Right Turbo For Your Dodge Ram Cummins Diesel

It’s true that everyone has their own brand loyalty, but when it comes to old Diesel pickups, the Dodge Ram Cummins seems to have the best hit rate. When it first became available for the 1989 model year, the Cummins 6BT blew away the competition such as the Detroit Diesel 6.2L and 6.5L in the GM pickups, or Ford’s IDI. Its use of direct injection and a turbocharger had the rest of the big three scrambling to catch up. Without dark eras in its history like the reliable-but-slow GM 6.5 or the emissions-choked 6.0L PowerStroke, and a reputation for reliability like the Million Mile Club, resale values on diesel Rams is through the roof.

Given the high miles these trucks see and the hard work they’re put through, some work is to be expected. Common issues include the VP44 and CP3 injection pumps on the 24-valve 5.9L, or common-rail injectors on the 6.7L. But just like any turbocharged vehicle, replacing the turbo is one of the biggest yet most common jobs out there. Finding the right turbo for your Cummins can be tough, since there are so many options based on model year and options, not to mention all the turbos available for the Cummins 6BT or ISB in commercial applications like semi trucks or construction equipment.

As part of our mission to make it easier to buy auto parts, we have created this buyer’s guide where you can find a link to the correct turbo that corresponds to your exact vehicle application, either a reliable stock replacement or something with a larger compressor housing or billet compressor wheel to make a little more power.
