The Boost Pressure Sensor is a part of a turbocharged engine. Turbocharged engines use a boosted air supply to burn fuel to produce more power than naturally aspirated engines. The boost pressure sensor measures the air pressure in the intake manifold of the boosted engine and the amount of boost in the manifold. This information is ported to the engine control unit (ECU) which adjusts the amount of fuel to be injected into the combustion chamber to ensure the right air-fuel ratio is maintained.

The pressure sensor uses a vacuum pressure as a reference point to measure the boost pressure. When there's a change in pressure, the resistance of the sensor chip changes. In essence, the sensor measures the difference between the boost pressure and the reference pressure as a voltage. The change in voltage is interpreted by the ECU which, in turn, regulates the fuel amount.

If the boost pressure sensor fails, you will notice a loss of boost power and reduced efficiency in your engine. A failure in your sensor will also turn the Check Engine light on in your dashboard.
