MAHLE

The company developed the light-alloy pistons, which broke the tradition of heavy-gray-cast-iron pistons. The light-alloy pistons were highly successful in the market, earning accolades for the company in the industry. To improve the performance of pistons, Mahle built air and oil filters in 1929. The following year saw the development of the first cylinder liners which were made of nitrided steel. In 1938, the company introduced the first blank cylinders, manufactured using centrifugal casting. After a decade, in 1948, the company produced the first AUTOTHERMIK® pistons which later went into series production in 1955. The company started using paper filter elements in the peripherals of the engine in the 1950s. In 1965, Mahle released the first sodium-filled hollow valves and hollow-cast camshafts.

The brand launched truck diesel-engine pistons constructed with ductile iron in 1976. In 1983, the company started manufacturing valve tappets using laser welding technology. Mahle entered into the development of assembled camshafts in 1985. The 1980s also saw the introduction of HYDROTHERMIK®, HYDROTHERMATIK®, FERROTHERM® and LIQUOSTATIK® series of pistons. Mahle started offering oil filter modules with filter inserts and plastic covers in 1993. In 1997, the brand entered into the production of air intake modules. The 1990s also saw the release of pistons with GRAFAL® and FERROPRINT® skirt coatings. In 2006, Mahle became the first firm to manufacture electric cone stack separators in the world. The company started producing electronic wastegate actuators in series in the year 2009.

Mahle has won many awards for its outstanding contributions to the piston industry with the most recent award being the Excellent supplier 2012 – 2014 from the Volvo Car Corporation. Mahle is a major shareholder in Behr, along with whom it produces a range of thermal management systems including cooling modules and complete HVAC systems.
