Their diesel injectors operate at over 30,000 pounds of pressure, and perform multiple microinjections per combustion event, so they work almost hardest of all the systems tied to this workhorse 5.9L Cummins diesel. As they age, injectors can develop return flow rate problems that lead to decreasing fuel economy. They can also become contaminated with the tiniest particles, with even a speck of two microns causing poor performance in some cases. If you are noticing excess smoke, sluggish or notchy acceleration, hard startup especially in cold conditions, or rough idle, you may be due for diesel injector replacement.
