Steering Column

The Steering Column is otherwise known as the steering shaft. It is an important component which links the steering wheel to the parts that turn the wheels of the vehicle. The function of the steering column is to convert torque generated by the steering wheel into power, which turns the car's wheels. In a rack and pinion steering, the steering column connects the steering wheel and the rack. The rack has grooves in it and is connected to the automobile's wheels. The column end has a pinion that fits into the rack's grooves. While turning the steering wheel, the column twists the pinion that moves along the grooves. This action pulls the rack to one side, thereby turning the wheels of the automobile.

In a recirculating ball steering, the steering column links the steering wheel and the recirculating ball gearbox. The column's end, which is like a screw, turns inside the steering gearbox. As the end of the column turns, it makes the Pitman arm rotate. This arm makes the vehicle's wheel turn in the required direction. In power steering, the steering column connects the steering wheel to the rotary valve. The power steering is engaged only when the vehicle is turning. When the column starts turning, the power steering pump is engaged by the rotary valve. This applies the pressure that helps the car's wheels turn.

The steering column also provides mounting for components such as the column lock, transmission gear selector and column wiring. If you hear a clunking or squeaking noise from the column or if your vehicle veers to one side, it is possible that the steering column is faulty. You should consider replacing the steering column to prevent possible damage to your car's steering mechanism. At Buy Auto Parts we stock a wide variety of steering column for every car make and model.
