Tire Pressure Monitoring Valve Stem

Tire Pressure Monitoring Valve Stem

The Tire Pressure Monitoring Valve Stem is the valve stem in the wheels of your car, on which the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is mounted. The valve stem acts as a check valve by opening to let pressurized air inside the tire, and the closing when the right pressure in the tire is reached. The TPM valve stems use a special valve core that is usually part of the sensor.

The TPMS senses the pressure in the car's wheels and sends it to the engine control unit (ECU). The ECU uses this data to alert the driver when the pressure in the tire drops below a certain limit. The sensors are attached to the valve stem and are suspended inside the tire's tubing. The valve stems are usually made of rubber or aluminum, with a plastic enclosure for the sensor electronics.

The TPMS valve should be kept properly closed with the valve cap to avoid any debris from entering the core. Since the sensor is attached to the stem, any debris entering the valve will also damage the sensor. If your valve stem is damaged, it can cause the tire-pressure sensor to wrongly assess the pressure in the tire. This would cause the ECU to either wrongly notify the driver of a flat tire or completely fail to indicate a leak in the tires. You should ensure that the TPMS valves are intact and leak-free before checking for a failed TPM sensor.
