Chevy is the informal name of Chevrolet, an American automaker. It is a subsidiary of General Motors and was established in 1911 by Louis Chevrolet and W.C Durant in Detroit. The brand released its first model, the Series C Classic Six, in 1911. Following Durant's reinstatement into General Motors, Chevy was merged into GM as a separate luxury division in 1918. The brand released the V8-motor powered Series D cars. However, the model was unpopular and was discontinued in 1919. Chevy continued to manufacture cheap, but efficient cars over the next few decades. It released the Standard Six, a car that was labeled as the “cheapest six-cylinder car on sale”, in 1933. In 1950, the Chevy Corvette, a two-seater sports car with a fiberglass body, hit the markets and is still one of the brand's most popular models.

The Bel-Air Hardtop, the first in a series of full-size automobiles, was also rolled out in 1950. The Impala, which was first manufactured in 1958, was distinguished by its symmetrical triple tail-lights. In 1964, Chevy rolled out the Caprice, which became one of the brand's popular models along with the Bel-Air and Impala. The Cavalier and Celebrity, a compact and mid-size car, respectively, were released in the 1980s. The company's sales suffered during the economic downturn of the late 2000s. However, in 2010, the brand released its first ever electrical plug-in hybrid car, the Volt. The Volt, which is the brand's most fuel-efficient model, won the “World Green Car of the Year” in 2012. Today's popular models of the car include the Corvette, Camaro, Impala and Malibu.
