Lincoln Motor Company is the luxury division of the Ford Motor Company. It was established in 1917 and has its headquarters in Detroit, Michigan. It was founded by Henry Leland and his son, Wilfred Leland and was named after US President Abraham Lincoln. The company started out by manufacturing Liberty aircraft engines for the First World War. It began producing luxury cars after the war, and was purchased by Ford Motor Company in 1922. Lincoln's product line was separate from Ford's until early 1940. The first vehicle to be released by the brand was the L-series in 1922. The Lincoln Continental was a personal luxury car that was produced in 1940. It was discontinued in 1948, but was revived again in 1956 as the Continental Mark II. 1949 saw the release of the Cosmopolitan, a full-size luxury car.

In 1961, Lincoln trimmed its model lineup to a single car, the Continental, that had a conservative styling and was equipped with suicide doors. The car was available as a sedan and a convertible. In 1977, the company rolled out the Versailles, the brand's first mid-size luxury car. The 1980s saw the Continental undergo a number of upgrades and the introduction of the Town Car/Town Coupe. The Town Car won the “Car of the Year” award from Motor Trend Magazine in 1990. The Lincoln division was one of the first brands to include safety features such as airbags and anti-lock braking system (ABS) in their vehicles. In the late 1990s, Ford Motor Company merged Lincoln into the Premier Automotive Group (PAG), a collective division formed to oversee the operations of Ford's luxury division. Lincoln's current product lineup includes the MKS, MKT, MKX, MKZ and Navigator.
